Color Interaction and Simultaneous Contrast

We began by using Color Aid colored paper to create a study of simultaneous contrast by finding two colors that can be made to look like they are the same when surrounded by a contrasting color. I mixed these colors with acrylic paint to the best of my ability to use on my final composition.

I constructed a diptych and painted an asymmetrical design that would create isolation of hues to achieve the same color effects as in the Color Aid study.

Once the diptych was completed, I used several different colored lamps to show the effects of different light on color. Some were more dramatic than others (green and orange), but it became very clear how our perception of color can be altered by both color isolation on the surrounding ground, and also the color of the light illuminating it.
